PREVIEW
At the start of the season the American League East Division was supposed to be a two horse race between the New York Yankees and the Boston Red Sox (79-34) but the latter are in the midst of a special season. They are on course to secure their most regular season wins in the history of the franchise while a four game sweep of the Yankees this past weekend has extended their lead to 9 games in the Division. It says a lot that the Yankees are very much on course to finish with what could be the third or fourth best record in the American League yet they have struggled to stay with the hot Red Sox. Entering the final quarter of the regular season it would be a real surprise if Boston do not go on and win the Division and they are looking to secure another series win over a Divisional rival when they begin a three game set in Canada. There wasn't a lot of expectation on the Toronto Blue Jays (51-60) going into the 2018 season and they have had some difficulties all season. The Blue Jays have had their troubles with the Boston Red Sox, like so many others have, and Toronto have lost ten of their thirteen Divisional games against them this season. Toronto will give the ball to Marcus Stroman who has a 4-8 record and a 5.63 ERA in 2018. It has been an up and down season for Stroman who is coming in off an outing where he gave up seven runs in 5 innings pitched against the Oakland Athletics which was the first decision loss for the pitcher since having another against the Boston Red Sox three weeks ago. That loss to Boston means Stroman is 4-3 with a 4.28 ERA in his eleven career starts against the Red Sox. He will be countered by Drew Pomeranz who has a 1-5 record with a 6.56 ERA in 2018 having been handed his third straight decision loss despite only giving up two runs in 5 innings last time out. Pomeranz will only be making his third start since coming off the Disabled List and he has given up six runs in the last couple of starts which may be a concern for the Boston Red Sox who look to maintain the momentum earned from the series sweep of rivals New York Yankees. The pitcher has played well on the road at Toronto having produced a 2-1 record with a 3.74 ERA in those games.
PREDICTION
There is a worry that the Boston Red Sox come off an emotional high of beating the New York Yankees four times in a row and can't get up for the first of their three game set in Toronto. They have a pitcher who is recently off the Disabled List and who has been a little inconsistent, but the Boston Red Sox have the batting line up to help out Drew Pomeranz. Boston are also facing a Blue Jays team who have been struggling all season and whose own pitcher has been inconsistent to say the least. I think that shows up here and the Red Sox can win this one
