INTRODUCTION

This is the first time in the European Super Cup histroy that two teams from the same city will be fighting for the trophy. European champion Real Madrid and their city rival Atletico Madrid who won the Europa Cup last season will be contesting for the cup, which will be held in Tallinn, Estonia. In the La Liga, Atletico Madrid finished second, with three points more then Real Madrid who finished third.



REAL MADRID

Real Madrid won the Champions League by beating Liverpool in the final and that means they have won it three consecutive years in a row. Now they will be gunning for a third Super Cup trophy, after they have lost to Sevilla and Manchester United last season. They have a total of four consecutive Super Cup titles and now they want to match the record Barcelona has which is five times. However, this will be the first time Real Madrid will be playing the Super Cup without Cristiano Ronaldo, who has left the Santiago Bernabeu after nine years and it will be interesting to see how Real Madrid will play without the Portuguese player, as well as the debut of the new coach Lopetegui. In their friendly matches they have played some good matches and now Bale has more space in the side, while Benzema has improved his form. They have also allowed Kovacic to move to Chelsea, and in return they bought goalkeeper Courtois from the Blues. It is not likely that Courtois will be fit for this match and we are also not likely to see Luka Modric start this match after just coming back from his World Cup holidays.



ATLETICO MADRID

Last season they completely failed in the Champions League, but then they went to the Europa League and they won it. Now as winners of the Europa League they got a chance to win the UEFA Super Cup as they come up against city rivals Real Madrid. They will not need any special incentive for this match, as they will want to avenge their European defats to Real Madrid, so they will not be short of motivation. In their last friendly match they were beaten by Inter Milan. They have seen a number of departures from the side such as Gabi, right back Vrsaljak, and striker Gameiro, while they brought Nikola Kalinic from Milan. They also brought in Arias from PSV which is a replacement for Vrsaljak. Their biggest signing has to be midfielder Lemar from Monaco. They also kept their striker Griezmann in the side for another season. Now after the departure of Gabi, they now have Rodri in the side. So in all, coach Simeone does have a very strong team once again.



PAST MEETINGS

Both of their meetings in La Liga ended in draws. However, since 2014, they have met six times in the Champions League and every time Real has achieved the overall win, including two finals.
