INTRODUCTION
This ATP Toronto is also known as the Rodgers Cup and this is the first round clash between Japanese Kei Nishikori and Dutch Robin Haase. This tournament takes place every two years and the title holder is N. Djokovic when he defeated K. Nishikori in the final in 2016.
NISHIKORI
Due to injuries he has been out of the tennis courts for sometime now, but the Japanese player is slowly getting back into his form and will want to climb up the ATP rabkings once again. Currently he occupies 20th in the ATP list and his best ranking was back at the start of 2015 when he reached number 4 in the world. He won 11 titles in his career to date and his last win was back in Memphis in 2016. This season he has played several good matches and his win/loss ratio stands at 20 wins and 10 losses. His last good result came at Wimbledon when he reached the quarter-finals but he was beaten by N. Djokovic going down 3-1. He also reached the final at the Masters in Monte Carlo but he didn't have much chance against Rafael Nadal in the final.
HAASE
Despite making significant progress compared to previous years, he is still far from his best ranking back in 2012 when he was 33 in the world. He comes into this tournament at 38th in the world ranking list and his win and loss ratio stands at 18 wins and 21 losses. Most of his wins came from the clay courts. Haase won both of his titles on clay courts, where two years ago he won the tournament in Kitzbuhel. This season his best result on hard surface came at the tournament in Auckland where he played in the semi-finals and was beaten after three sets to R. Bautista-Agut.
