INTRODUCTION

Argentinian J.M. Del Potro and Serb N. Djokovic will contest the last Grand Slam for this season which is the US Open. Even though R. Nadal was forced to withdraw against Del Potro due to injury, it can be said that at that time Del Potro was already up by two sets. On the other hand, Djokovic was a too strong for k. Nishikori in the other semi final.



DEL POTRO

Del Potro is again in the final of the US Open after nine years. Then the Argentinian played his first ever Grand Slam final and he managed to defeat R. Federer. At that time Del Potro was just 20 years old and after that everyone had expected him to go on and win more tournaments in the future. However that did not happened as Del Potro had to battled against injury in his career and he was unable to break into the top four with the likes of Federer, Murray, Djokovic and Nadal. He does not have a good record against the top players, but there are days when the Argentinian can beat any of the top three playrs in the world, although that does not happen very often. In the semi final, Del Potro was able to match Nadal and he had he had advantage of one break twice but on both occasion he dropped them both. He won the first set after the tie break though. In the second set Nadal had a knee injury which slowed him down and in the end he was not able to move. After losing the second set the Spaniard decided to withdraw



DJOKOVIC

Djokovic played well against Nishikori. Even though the Japanese played well, but not it was not good enough to defeat a determined Djokovic. He managed to wind back the clock playing some good, strong and precise winners as he was capable of doing before. When he plays like that even much better players than Nishikori would also be in trouble. Still credits to Nisjhikori who fought hard and played several excellent shots. The match lasted 2 hours and 22 minutes and the result read in the end 6-3, 6-4, 6-2 in favour of Djokovic. There was just one break in the first set and that took place in the second game when Djokovic put tremendous pressure on Nishikori’s service. That was enough for a 1-0 lead. In the second set we saw more break points, with Djokovic once again making one break and that was all that was needed. After having lead 2-0 in sets everything was easier for the former World No.1 and Nishikori began to lacked motivation in the third set and Djokovic as expected finished the match.



PAST MEETINGS

Djokovic won 14 of their head to head, while Del Potro only won 4 of their head to heads. The two of them haven’t met this season, while last year they played three matches and Djokovic won all three of them.
