INTRODUCTION

Cilic and Nishikori contested the final of the US Open four years ago. Now they will go head to head in the quarter finals and this promises to be a very interesting match. In the last round, Cilic defeated D. Goffin without dropping a set, while Nishikori defeated German P. Kohlschreiber 3-0 as well.

Even Cilic himself could not believe how easily he defeated Belgian Goffin in the last 16. The match took two and a half hours and Cilic won 7:6 6:2 6:4. As we can see Goffin only provided stiff resistance in the first set. The match was going Goffin's way because he had already managed to make a break on Cilic’s service at the very start. But that advantage did not last long as Cilic managed to even the score and then win the first set in the tie break. Then after losing the first set, Goffin completely fell apart. From that moment onwards Cilic played better and better, which Goffin was unable to match him in any way. Most of the important statistics was on the side of the Croatian player Cilic.



NISHIKORI

He has suffered injury in the past and that has affected his current ranking in the ATP list. At the moment he is at 19th position in the ATP list. His best career ranking was three years ago when he was ranked fourth in the world. The Japanese player has managed to win 11 titles in his professional career and the last of them was in 2016 at the tournament in Memphis, where he was four times winner. This season his win and loss ratio stands at 23 wins and 13 defeats. This year his best performance was at the Masters in Monte Carlo where he surprisingly reached the final but did not have a chance against R. Nadal. He also reached the semi-finals of the tournament in New York where he was stopped by eventual winner Kevin Anderson. Most of his other tournaments he participated in ended at the early stages of the competition, so reaching the US Open quarter finals is already one of his best results this season.



PAST MEETINGS

The head to head between two players is 8:6 in favour of Kei Nishikori. This season they met once at the Monte Carlo tournament, and Nishikori won it. However Cilic won the final four years ago at the US Open.
