INTRODUCTION

Argentinian J.M. Del Potro and American J. Isner will take on each other in the second quarter final match in the US Open. In the previous round Del Potro beat Croatian player B. Coric, while Isner managed to beat Canadian M. Ronic after a five set marathon.

DEL POTRO

Beofre the US Open, Del Potro climbed to third in the ATP rankings and that is also the highest ranking the Argentinian has reached in his career. This season he has had many good and bad matches for the Argentinian. He has been hampered by injuries in his career and that prevented him challengeing for the top two places in the world rankings. His win and loss ratio for the season reads as 37 wins and 10 losses. He has won 22 career titles and this season he has won two titles. This season he finally captured his first Masters title, which happened in Indian Wells where he managed to defeat R. Nadal in the final.

ISNER

Isner is also enjoying one of the best tennis in his career and he reached 8th in the ATP rankings over a month ago. His win and loss record reads as 26 wins and 15 losses and he has won two ATP titles this season. He won the Masters in Miami defeating German A. Zverev in the final which should be singled out. In the last 16 he had a difficult task against Canadian M. Raonic. Despite Isner having a good start and taking a 2-0 lead but Raonic managed to come back and tied it to 2-2. However Isner won the important fifth set to win it 3-2. As expected there was a number of aces and first service which Isner dominated by 86% – 79%.

PAST MEETINGS

In their last 11 head to head, Del Potro has been more successful then Isner as he won 7 while Isner won 4. This season they met two times, and Isner was much better at the Masters in Miami winning 6-1, 7-6, but Del Potro revenged at Roland Garros winning 6-4, 6-4, 6-4.

INTRODUCTION

This is the clash between defending Champions Rafael Nadal and Austrian Dominic Thiem. In the last 16 both players defeated their opponents with ease as Thiem defeated Kevin Anderson without dropping a set, while Nadal defeated N. Bashilashvili by 3-1.

NADAL

Last season he won the US Open after he defeated Kevin Anderson in the final. Now the Spaniard will be aiming to defend his title and this will be the first test against Dominic Thiem. He is on target to defend the title at the moment as he has not come up against a difficult opponent as such, although nothing is to be taken away from the opponents that he has faced so far just that they are not the same level as he is. In his professional career he has won over 80 ATP titles and he is currently ranked 1st in the ATP rankings. This season he is in good shape and it can be seen from the fact that he lost just three matches before the US Open, while he has won 40 of them. Despite Basilashvili giving his best, we could say that Nadal had it fairly easy and just as expected the entire statistics was on Nadal's side. The Georgian did win the third set after a tie break but that was little consolation as he lost by 3-1.

THIEM

Thiem surprised many when he defeated last year's finalist Kevin Anderson in the last 16. Even though the win was not to surprising, but then the result in which the Austrian won was very surprising. Anderson was the favourite to win mostly due to his first service as well as the hard surface but then he failed to win a single set which was just unbelievable. In the end Thiem won by 7-5, 6-2, 7-6. The South African did enjoyed a better first service as can be seen from the statistics of 69% – 49%, but then he failed to put it to good use.

PAST MEETINGS

They have played ten head to head so far and interestingly all of them were played on clay courts. So this will be their first meeting on hard surface which neither player prefers it.
